Mom, There's a Man in the Kitchen and He's Wearing Your Robe

It's Either Her or Me

Dating for Dads. The Single Father's Guide to Dating Well without Parenting Poorly

Ellie Slott Fisher

Honesty, frankness, personal (and embarrassing) revelations and a healthy dose of humor.

Ellie FisherWhen I first set out to write about dating as a single mom, I approached it from the perspective of a journalist – objective observer rather than emotionally involved participant. My agent said, “No. No. No. It’s missing heart; it’s missing voice. Write about yourself.” Gulp. Didn’t she know that the reason we go into print journalism is so we can report from the sidelines? A kind of: You show me yours, but I’m not showing you mine. But she insisted, “You’re the expert. You’ve been there.” So I came home from our meeting and sat down at my computer and slowly began to write about my own experiences – all highly embarrassing, riddled with poor judgment, and until now, very secret. The words just flowed. I mean, flowed to the point I couldn’t believe what I, a very private person by all accounts, began to reveal. My bra size. My mistaking lust for love (Who knew? I was 41 for G-d’s sake). My cowardly methods of ending romances.

In the end, I was rewarded with not only wonderful reviews that referred to me as “a trusted girlfriend” and called my guide “real-world, on-the-ground stuff…warm-hearted and wonderful…with heart, humor and savvy” but also with a great sense of relief. I could indeed show you mine.

The natural follow-up up to Mom, There’s a Man in the Kitchen and He’s Wearing Your Robe is Dating for Dads, in which I reach a virtually ignored and ever-growing audience of single fathers and embellish my reputation as a relationship expert. My newest book on relationships, It’s Either Her or Me,  shines a spotlight on the sometimes challenging, but oftentimes rewarding connection among all the women in a guy’s life. Any woman who is, was, or will be a mother, mother-in-law, wife, girlfriend, sister or sister-in-law will learn from the wonderful women who share their stories.
